The Prince Man The Five Kingdoms Deborah Jay 9781492147480 Books Reviews
I enjoyed this fantasy book more than I thought I would. I particularly enjoyed seeing the characters' development over the course of the story. Chalice, particularly, has a sort of "coming of age" experience in that he comes to realize the importance of the people in is life for more than simply pawns in the game. His friendship with Elwaes was especially well written, developed, and poignant. I just think that the whole thing is very well done and I can't wait for the sequel! I found only a very few editing errors and I had a hard time putting it down to sleep and/or work.
What a great book! I figured this was going to be one of the same ol’ romance books (not that there is anything wrong with a good romance!) but I was pleasantly surprised!
The beginning is a bit of a head scratcher at first. It begins with a scene from 20 years before that shows how Risada became an orphan and choose to become an assassin.
Then it skips to present time where Rustam (Rusty) is off doing his spy work.
If you just give it a few chapters though, everything starts fitting together and it gets really really good.
I loved all the characters. Rusty and Elwaes were hands down my favorite. I can see how some people are put off by Risada, but I can *get* her. She was formed by circumstances and is a very strong women. Nothing wrong with that! Although she does come off as a biatch sometimes and that does take away from the likability of her.
The plot had magic, intrigue, suspense, betrayal, and of course a little bit of romance.
Although it is book one and there will be more (can’t wait!) it was not left on a cliffhanger. So for those of you who hate to read a book before the whole series is out shouldn’t have a problem with this one.
Deborah Jay has taken the usual supernatural players of elves, trolls, were-animals, elementals, etc. thrown in the political shenanigans of monarchies in a feudal society reminiscent of the Tudor period, some swords, sorcery, a touch of Tolkien and now has lots of territory to explore into a series beyond the two books currently available. You go,girl!
What an interesting, captivating world Deborah Jay has created with Book 1 of The Five Kingdom series. I admit, I am in awe of writers who can lay out a fictional realm of this scope, complete with political structure and geographical details that make total sense. I can barely cope with writing about the world I live in, so my hat's off to all the great fantasy authors out there, including Deborah Jay.
Ladies' man extraordinaire, we first meet hero Rustam Chalice as he's escaping from the bedchamber of a married conquest. It soon becomes apparent, though, that Rusty is not just a dancing tutor with an eye toward bedroom dalliances. Oh, nothing so simple as that. He is actually a spy for Prince Halnashead, and unpleasant (wink-wink) though it may be, when duty calls, he's happy to seduce whichever "lady" will help him in his espionage.
Of course, there's one Lady who's unattainable, and Rusty is fascinated by her, but as it turns out, she has a few secrets of her own. Throwing these two together, in a world populated with every sort of magical and truly scary creature you can imagine, results in a love/hate romance that pulls you right in.
I will say that I am not a fan of Lady Risada, thus far, and have no clue what she could possibly be thinking by the book's end, but I'm quite sure it will all sort itself out in the next book. Or the one after that. Each of which, I will be reading.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching the likable, though somewhat shallow, Rustam Chalice grow up, question his life choices to date, and become a far more interesting and admirable man by the conclusion of the story. His friendship with the elf he and Risada rescued from years of torture was probably my favorite part of the tale. Elwaes was a delightful character, who added a lot of mystery and fun to the adventure.
All in all, a great read. If you enjoy epic fantasy, be sure to give this one a try.
